ACTIVITIES

Tonga Water Board is part of the Utilities group and its board of directors are shared with Tonga Power Limited and Waste Authority Limited.

The Tonga Water Board (TWB) was established under the Tonga Water Board Act 2000 (TWB Act): the functions of the Board are set out in Section 5 of the Act and include to provide water supply services for domestic, stock, commercial, recreational, environmental and other beneficial uses in any area which it may be appointed to in the Act or Regulations.

The TWB Act requires the SOE to provide its services efficiently and economically and to exercise its powers in accordance with the economic, social and environmental policies of the Government; and sound commercial practices, including the need to ensure that its revenues are sufficient to provide for all depreciation, amortization of interest costs; for all operational and maintenance costs and to provide a reasonable return on investment.

TWB is responsible for the provision of water on Tongatapu and parts of the Vava’u and Ha’apai groups and on the island of ‘Eua. Residential and commercial connections on Tongatapu are metered. The water is supplied from ground bores and must be pumped around the island due to the island’s low elevation: parts of Tongatapu are below sea level.

TWB paid a dividend of $T1 million for the 2015 financial year.

The TWB also has powers as a regulator set out in the TWB Act.
